The Weird But Effective Remedy for Hair Loss
Despite popular misconception, hair loss is not just something men struggle with. Sure it may be a more obvious blow to the ego, but women are also faced with the stress and embarrassment of thinning or balding hair.
As I say for all health concerns, it is important to get to the root of the issue and find out what symptoms like hair loss could be trying to tell you about your overall health.
Sometimes hair loss could be more serious than stress and may indicate that your body is lacking essential nutrients. People who suffer from auto-immune diseases like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism often struggle with increased hair loss.
It is considered normal to loose between 50-100 hairs a day – but don’t expect to be able to verify that by counting.
Environmental stressors can trigger hair loss like a change in hair care product or even water quality in a new home.
Get out the tissues.
It’s no secret that onions can be pungent, but did you know the juice from an onion can actually help promote hair growth?
According to research, the rich sulphur content of an onion can improve the production of collagen tissues which are necessary for the growth of hair proteins.
Their potency will have you crying tears of joy too!
When applied to the scalp, onion juice can improve circulation to the blood in and around the follicles encouraging cell rejuvenation making it a great hair loss remedy. Increased blood flow also ensures that essential vitamins and nutrients flow to the follicle and support a strong strand that can withstand breakage.
The acidity of an onion can also be effective in treating and eliminating dandruff – which may be a contributing factor in hair growth prevention.
When the hair follicles are clear of debris and excess skin cells, the hair has room to grow!
Here are three simple and effective remedies which use onion to combat hair loss:
1. Edible Honey Onion Mask:
This first application can also be effective from the inside out. Mix 1/4 cup of onion juice with one tablespoon of honey and consume every day for 2 weeks and you will start to notice a dramatic change in the strength and volume of your hair.
Alternatively, you can apply the same mixture to your hair, massaging into the scalp and leaving to soak for 20 minutes. This can be done 1-2 times a week for noticeably thicker locks.
2. Onion and Rum Soak
This recipe is more pleasing to the nose. Simply soak a chopped whole white onion (medium size) in one cup of dark rum overnight. In the morning strain and massage the liquid into the scalp and strands post shampoo. Rinse with water.
3. Boiled Onion Juice
This will also leave hair shiny and full but without too many tears. Chop 4 medium white onions and bring them to a boil in a litre of water. Strain and let cool before using as a rinse post shampoo. It will not only lock in moisture but it can clear the scalp of any sudsy buildup from creamy shampoos.
There is no right or wrong way to use onion for hair support, but some methods (like the ones I’ve listed above) minimize the intense odor and reduce the tears.
